Operation
Boom Bust
In
July of 2008, the Hammond Police Department unveiled a new program
called "Operation Boom Bust".
Due
to endless complaints from residents about loud music coming from
car stereos, the Hammond Police Department will begin two 4 hour
shifts each week patrolling specificlly for cars with loud music.
We are using one marked and one unmarked patrol car to make the
traffic stops. Hammond's city code states, if music from a car
can be heard from a distance of 25 feet or more, the police can
issue a citation, and tow the vehicle.
Our
City Attorney has pledged her cooperation and will ask the court
to impose the maximum fine of $500.00 for the loud music in addition
to the $100.00 tow fee ($600.00 total).
"Whether
it's Classical, Rock, Rap, or Country Western, citizens dont want
to listen to music from passing cars!"
We
will be performing this operation in all areas of Hammond, but
if you know of a particular neighborhood with a problem, please
call our Traffic Division at (219)852-2911.
Sincerely,
Chief
Brian Miller
