911 Dispatcher
The Hammond Police Department is currently accepting applications
for the position of 911 Dispatcher. Applications can be picked
up at the Personnel office of Hammond City Hall located at
5925 Calumet between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m..
The annual salary for a probationary 911 dispatcher with the
Hammond Police Department is $24,170.00.
Minimum initial requirements for 911 Dispatcher
Minimum typing speed of 40 words per minute.
Must read and write the English language and be a high school
graduate or G.E.D. equivalent.
Ability to pass the Henmon Nelson Memory Retention and typing test.
Ability to work rotating shifts (midnights, afternoons, days) without exception.
Ability to pass drug screen, background check, voice stress analysis,
psychological exam, and hearing test.
Be of good reputation and character.
Shall not have been convicted of a felony.
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Must be a Hammond city resident at the time of hire.

Police Officer
The annual salary for a probationary police officer with the
Hammond Police Department is $33,579.00. The application requirements
are listed below.
All applicants must meet the basic requirements of the Hammond
Police Department and the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy to be
considered for employment.
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age or attain such age by the
date of hire and not older than 35 years of age by the date of hire.
Applicants must be able to read and write the English language.
Applicants must possess a valid Indiana Drivers License at the time of hire.
Applicants must never have been convicted of a felony.
An applicant who has engaged in criminal activity may be rejected by the
Hammond Police Department regardless of whether the applicant has ever been
prosecuted, convicted or acquitted.
Applicants must be of good moral character and reputation.
Applicants must pass all testing established by the Hammond Police Department.
Applicants must be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D. equivalent.
Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of Hammond, Indiana at
the time of hire, and must maintain residency in the city of Hammond
during the first year of employment.
Applicants must submit to a voice stress analysis.
Once applicants complete all non-medical testing and background investigations,
applicants will receive an application for membership in the 1977
Police Officers and Firefighters Pension and Disability Fund, which contains
a conditional offer of employment and a statement of understanding.
The offer of employment is conditional on the the applicant successfully
passing the statewide baseline medical examination and
the statewide mental examination.
Applicants must possess strength and agility necessary to perform
routine law enforcement duties.
Applicants must submit to fingerprinting and have a photograph
taken by the police department.
Applicants cannot have been dishonorably discharged from military
service. A discharge other than honorable may be grounds for rejection.
Applicants must submit to a battery of psychological examinations
and an interview with a clinical psychologist.
Job Shadowing Program:
Once a year, high school students are exposed to different specialties
of the Hammond Police Department. This program is performed in
cooperation with the School City of Hammond.
